Aluminum and uranium show highest return last year

The total return was defined as the sum of the annual growth of securities quotations as a percentage and the dividend yield of these shares. The growth of quotations was noted from the closing price of trading in 2020 to the closing price of trading in 2021 on the main trading platforms of issuers. The dividend yield was calculated as a percentage of the amount of all dividends paid during the year to the share price at the end of 2020.

The top 10 is made up of stocks that can be bought for US dollars.

By the end of 2021, the S&P 500 index of total profitability of the most expensive American companies increased by 28.71%. We took it for comparison, as a significant stock index compiled on the basis of stock quotes traded in dollars. The average yield of the top ten stocks in our catalog was 142.42% in 2021.

The leader of our top — Alcoa - showed a yield of 158.92% for the year. KazAtomProm's closing top ten shares provided the investor with a yield of 112.29% in 2021.

Among the most profitable stocks are two securities of mining and metallurgical companies (Alcoa and KazAtomProm) and automakers (Tata Motors and Ford Motor). Six other stocks represent each a separate sector: TCS Group - finance, IT sector - Asana, Marathon Oil - from the oil and gas sector, Moderna - from biopharma, Macy's - from retail, as well as NVIDIA as a representative of electronics manufacturers.

The overwhelming share of profitability, namely 99%, was provided by the growth of quotations. With an average total return of 142.4%, the average growth of quotations of the ten most profitable stocks was 141%, and their average dividend yield was 1.4%.

Tata Motors, Asana and Moderna did not pay dividends during 2021. Among the most profitable foreign securities of the catalog, the maximum dividend yield is 7.56%, showed the securities of Kazakhstan's KazAtomProm, engaged in the extraction and processing of uranium and rare earth metals.

Which stocks grew rapidly?

The role of the growth of quotations in full profitability was manifested in the fact that the lists of the most profitable stocks of the past year and the top 10 most expensive stocks in our catalog completely coincide. Moreover, all stocks have the same positions in both tops.

The quotations of the ten most expensive foreign stocks in our catalog increased by an average of 141% in 2021 with a spread from 158.48% to 104.74%. For comparison, the S&P 500 index grew by 26.89% in 2021 — from 3,756.08 to 4,766.19 points.

Financial indicators have become the growth driver for almost all of our top securities. In their reports, the companies showed results that exceeded investors' expectations, which ensured purchases and growth of quotations almost until the end of the year. The only exception is KazAtomProm securities. The company's financial results were quite unstable. KazAtomProm securities have risen in price along with a significant increase in uranium prices (in September, the cost of a contract for a pound of uranium at COMEX rose to $50 from $30-$33 in August.

Each company whose papers were included in the list of the best had its own growth catalysts. For example, Alcoa quotes moved synchronously with aluminum prices, Marathon Oil stock prices depended on the cost of oil, and the movements of NVIDIA quotes, whose processors use cryptominers, largely coincided with fluctuations in bitcoin prices. Moderna's financial performance reflected the success of the company's vaccine.

Asana shares appeared on the stock exchange in the fall of 2020 and the novelty of the startup may have been an additional driver of both growth and a significant correction that replaced growth. After the release of the financial statements in June, investors by November "dispersed" the company's quotes from $37 to almost $137. But the reports published in December amid rising rates slightly dampened investor enthusiasm and the company's shares fell in price by the end of the year to the level of $75.

TCS Group, Tata Motors, Ford Motor and Macy's showed steady development throughout 2021, reflected in the financial results and the growth of the companies' quotations.

The best stocks by dividend yield

As in 2020, dividends did not become a driver of rapid growth. The average dividend yield of the ten foreign shares in our catalog with the highest dividend yield was 9.74%. At the same time, the average growth of quotations of this list was 31.36%.

Out of the top 10 in terms of dividend yield, only one share (KazAtomProm) entered the top 10 in terms of price growth. In addition to KazAtomProm, out of the top 10 in terms of dividend yield, Simon Property (+87.3%), Exxon Mobil (+48.4%) and PetroChina (+43.9%) showed above-average growth in quotations.

The leader of the top in terms of dividend yield of VMware and showed the most significant decline in quotations for the year. With a dividend yield of 19.5%, the company lost 17.4% of its value over the year. Also, the price reduction "ate" part of the dividend yield of British American tobacco securities. The quotes of BAHT decreased by 0.2% at the end of the year, despite the fact that the company showed a yield of 7.8%.

The value of AT&T shares in general decreased by 14.5%, as a result of which investors, even despite a dividend yield of 7.2%, received a loss at the end of the year.
